”I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”
- Thomas Jefferson
In the most visceral sense, an ideal society consists of the balanced coexistence of freedom without chaos and order without oppression. However, the perceived problem with such idealism is that too much freedom leads to chaos, just as too much order leads to oppression. Therefore, at least in theory, the concept of an ideal society could not exist. Instead, the closest possible form to perfection can only be achieved through balance, that is, the balance of freedom and order, and, consequently, chaos and oppression. The problem with choosing an ideal balance is that the power to set the balance doesn’t lie in the hands of everyone, but that power is available to a select few. These few have money, status, privilege, influence, and thus, power to tilt the scales as they may. Since this select few has power, and since those with power generally want to stay in power, they will opt for order rather than freedom. To the select few, order is favorable to freedom because if people are left too free, there is a risk that anyone could take the power of the select few. Basically, to visualize the social hierarchy, imagine a human triangle. There is one person atop many, and the people closer to the top are exerting force on those below them. Everyone puts pressure on everyone else. The people on top are desperately trying to hold their stance, while the people below them are pushing upward, attempting to overthrow those above. To understand anarchy, visualize this triangle being collapsed. Now, everyone stands on level ground, no one person above or below another. Still, despite the level ground, there is bound to be conflict. But, the idea is that now since the conflict exists on level ground, no one person is ranked above the other. This equal ranking promotes fairness during conflict. This is what anarchy is all about. It is not gratuitous violence or barbaric rage, not primal savages reacting to their carnal instincts or animals indulging in their natural desires, it is all people, standing together, on level ground.
